When a loved one is struggling with substance use, family members often feel helpless, unsure of how to offer support without enabling harmful behaviors. Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is a proven, evidence-based approach that empowers families to foster positive change while prioritizing their own well-being.

SummitStone Health Partners is committed to providing compassionate, research-backed support for families facing substance use challenges. Through services like Peer Support Services and Case Management, we help families apply CRAFT principles and navigate the journey toward recovery together.

What Is Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT)?

CRAFT is a structured, skills-based approach designed to help families and friends:

  • Encourage a loved one to seek treatment voluntarily
  • Improve communication and strengthen relationships
  • Reduce conflict and stress at home
  • Prioritize self-care while supporting recovery

Unlike traditional intervention models, which can sometimes feel confrontational, CRAFT focuses on positive reinforcement and behavioral strategies to guide loved ones toward change. Research has shown that CRAFT is highly effective in increasing treatment engagement for individuals with substance use disorders—without using ultimatums or coercion.

How CRAFT Differs From Traditional Approaches

Many families wonder how CRAFT compares to other support systems like Al-Anon or traditional interventions. While all approaches aim to help families, they differ in their strategies:

  • Traditional interventions often involve a direct confrontation, where loved ones express their concerns and encourage immediate treatment. While this method can work for some, it may push others away.
  • Al-Anon focuses on personal detachment from a loved one’s addiction, encouraging family members to find peace regardless of whether the person struggling with substance use seeks help.
  • CRAFT, in contrast, is an active, skill-based method that teaches family members how to motivate and support their loved ones in seeking treatment while maintaining a healthy relationship.

“[The CRAFT] environment has really helped me remove the shame and help[ed] me open up and be more honest with myself and others. That’s been a huge learning experience for me, just to see that I’m not alone.”Elizabeth (name changed to respect privacy)

Case Management

Navigating the healthcare system can be overwhelming, especially when dealing with substance use challenges. Our Case Management team connects families with treatment providers, support groups, and other essential services to ensure they have access to the resources they need.

“When I entered the program, boundaries were something that I really lacked,” she said. “The program has helped me build physical boundaries—how I interact with my loved ones—and emotional boundaries—really confronting and labeling how I’m feeling or how I handled a certain situation. What I’ve learned from this program is how to communicate my boundaries in a healthy way and really stand up for myself.”

As the new year begins, it’s an excellent opportunity to focus on building habits that promote mental wellness. Mental health is an essential part of overall well-being, and small, consistent actions can make a big difference over time. Whether you’re looking to improve your mental health or maintain it, here are some actionable tips to start the year strong.

1. Prioritize Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep is fundamental to mental health. Poor sleep can exacerbate stress, anxiety, and depression. To improve your sleep hygiene, try the following:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as reading or meditating.
  • Limit screen time before bed to reduce exposure to blue light.

According to the Sleep Foundation, adults should aim for at least of 7 hours of sleep per night. Ensuring restful sleep is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to support your mental health.

2. Connect with Others

Social connections play a vital role in mental wellness. Engaging with family, friends, or support groups can help reduce feelings of isolation and build a sense of community. If you’re struggling to find connection, consider SummitStone’s Peer Support Services. These services connect you with individuals who have lived experience and can provide understanding and encouragement.

3. Move Your Body

Regular physical activity is a powerful tool for improving mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which can boost mood and reduce stress. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a gym session, aim for at least 30 minutes of activity most days of the week. The Mayo Clinic highlights that regular exercise can also improve sleep and increase self-esteem.

4. Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment without judgment. This practice has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall mental well-being. Simple ways to incorporate mindfulness into your daily life include:

  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Meditation apps like Headspace or Calm
  • Journaling to reflect on your thoughts and emotions

If you’re new to mindfulness, start with just a few minutes a day and gradually increase your practice.

5. Seek Professional Support When Needed

It’s important to recognize when self-care isn’t enough. Seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness. SummitStone offers Telehealth Services that make it easier to access care from the comfort of your home. Whether you’re seeking therapy, medication management, or support for substance use, help is just a click away.

6. Establish a Healthy Routine

Having a structured daily routine can bring stability and reduce feelings of overwhelm. Start by setting realistic goals for your day, such as:

  • Preparing balanced meals.
  • Scheduling regular breaks during work or school.
  • Creating time for hobbies or activities you enjoy.

Building a routine provides a sense of purpose and accomplishment, which can significantly impact your mental health.

7. Limit Screen Time

Excessive screen time, particularly on social media, can negatively impact mental health. Consider setting boundaries, such as:

  • Designating screen-free times during meals or before bed.
  • Using apps that track and limit screen time.
  • Curating your social media feeds to focus on positive and inspiring content.

8. Fuel Your Body with Nutritious Foods

What you eat can affect how you feel. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can boost your energy levels and mood. Consider consulting with a nutritionist if you’re unsure where to start.

Take the First Step

Adopting healthy habits for mental health doesn’t happen overnight. Start small and build on your successes. Whether it’s prioritizing sleep, seeking support through SummitStone’s Peer Support Services, or accessing our Telehealth Services, there are many resources available to help you thrive. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey, and even small steps can lead to meaningful progress. If you’re ready to get started, reach out to SummitStone today and take the first step toward better mental health.

Holiday Self-Care: Tips for Navigating Mental Health Challenges and Finding Joy During the Season https://www.summitstone.org/2024/12/20/mental-health-tips-for-holidays/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 17:04:36 +0000 https://www.summitstone.org/?p=13844 The post Holiday Self-Care: Tips for Navigating Mental Health Challenges and Finding Joy During the Season appeared first on SummitStone Health Partners.

Need some mental health tips for the holidays this year? The holidays can be a joyful time, filled with family gatherings, festive traditions, and the spirit of giving. However, for many people struggling with mental health challenges, the holiday season can also bring increased anxiety, stress and feelings of loneliness.

At SummitStone Health Partners, we understand the holidays can be a difficult time for many. That’s why we’ve compiled these mental health tips to help you navigate the season with greater ease and prioritize your well-being. First, let’s explore why people might feel depressed and anxious during this time of year.

The Holidays and Mental Health Challenges

For many, the holiday season is a time of joy and celebration. However, it can also be a difficult time for those struggling with mental health challenges. The pressure to feel happy and joyful, coupled with increased social demands and potential family conflicts, can exacerbate feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness.

  • Depression: For some, the holidays can trigger feelings of grief and loss, particularly if they are experiencing the first holiday season without a loved one. The festive atmosphere can also heighten feelings of isolation and loneliness, especially for those who are single, estranged from family or experiencing difficult life transitions.
  • Substance Use: Unfortunately, substance use also tends to increase during the holiday season. The increased availability of alcohol at parties and social gatherings, coupled with the pressure to relax and “let loose,” can contribute to excessive alcohol consumption. For some, the holidays may trigger a relapse into substance use as a way to cope with stress, anxiety or difficult emotions.

It’s important to remember these experiences are not uncommon. If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or substance use during the holiday season, know that you are not alone. Here are some mental health tips to combat and even avoid some common coping mechanisms of depression and anxious feelings during the holiday season.

1. Set Realistic Expectations and Boundaries

The pressure to create a “perfect” holiday can be overwhelming. In fact, according to an article in Psychology Today, “the concept of “holiday perfectionism” has even been studied. Research in the Journal of Happiness Studies reveals that people who set overly high standards for their holiday experiences often report more distress and less overall satisfaction throughout the season. This mental health tip focuses on letting go of unrealistic expectations and prioritizing your own needs during the holidays.

  • Acknowledge that “perfect” doesn’t exist: Let go of the pressure to create a picture-perfect holiday. Focus on creating meaningful moments and experiences, even if they’re imperfect.
  • Schedule time for yourself: Amidst the holiday hustle, make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This could include reading, taking a warm bath, spending time in nature, or simply enjoying a quiet moment alone.
  • Learn to say “no”: It’s okay to decline invitations or set boundaries to protect your mental and emotional well-being.

2. Practice Mindfulness and Self-Compassion

Stress can have several effects on your health and well-being. Mindfulness and self-compassion are essential tools for navigating stress and emotional challenges. This mental health tip for the holidays explores how to cultivate these practices.

  • Engage in mindfulness practices: Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help you stay present and reduce feelings of anxiety.
  • Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment and be gentle with yourself during challenging times.

3. Connect Authentically with Loved Ones

The holidays are a time for connection, but it’s important to focus on quality over quantity. This step emphasizes the importance of authentic and meaningful connections. Being present and engaged helps you feel gratitude for the moment you’re in.

  • Quality over quantity: Focus on meaningful connections with loved ones rather than the number of social engagements.
  • Open and honest communication: Share your feelings and needs with trusted loved ones.
  • Limit social media: Avoid comparing your holiday experiences to the idealized versions often portrayed on social media.

4. Prioritize Physical Health

The holiday season can be a whirlwind of social events, festive meals and late nights. It can feel challenging to maintain healthy habits amidst the excitement and distractions. However, prioritizing physical health is crucial, especially during times of stress. Exercise, quality sleep and a balanced diet aren’t just about physical fitness; they have a profound impact on our mental well-being.

When we engage in physical activity, our bodies release endorphins, natural mood boosters that can combat feelings of anxiety and depression. Regular exercise can also improve sleep quality, which is essential for emotional regulation and cognitive function.

Furthermore, a balanced diet provides our bodies with the nutrients they need to function optimally. When we nourish ourselves properly, we have more energy to cope with stress, better focus to navigate social situations and a more stable mood overall.

Remember, it’s not about achieving perfection. Even small steps, such as taking a short walk each day, getting enough sleep, or making conscious choices about your meals, can make a big difference in how you feel both physically and mentally during the holiday season.

5. Seek Support When You Need It

Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. This step emphasizes the importance of seeking support from your network and professional resources.

  • Reach out to your support system: Talk to friends, family, or a therapist about how you’re feeling.
  • Consider professional support: Summitstone Health Partners offers a range of mental health services, including therapy, medication management, and support groups, to help you navigate mental health challenges. Check out all of our services here.
  • Awareness is the first step. Utilize free tools for awareness to gauge your mental health around the holidays.
    • At Summitstone Health Partners we have a FREE Mental Health Screening tool. Powered by MindWise, it is completely anonymous and confidential, and immediately following the brief questionnaire you will see your results, recommendations, and key resources. Take your Mental Health Screening here.
    • Mental Health First Aid Classes: SummitStone Health Partners is helping to bring Mental Health First Aid to Northern Colorado in order to encourage public understanding of the signs and symptoms associated with behavioral health issues.  We are proud to offer Mental Health First Aid Colorado courses to help improve participants’ knowledge of behavioral health disorders, reducing the stigma, and increasing the amount of help available for those who may need it. Register for an upcoming class here.

Remember, the holidays can be a challenging time for many. You’re not alone. Be kind to yourself, prioritize your well-being, and reach out for support when needed.

Native American Heritage Month: Reflect, Heal, and Build Mental Wellness Through Gratitude https://www.summitstone.org/2024/11/22/native-american-heritage-month/ Fri, 22 Nov 2024 16:27:27 +0000 https://www.summitstone.org/?p=13780 The post Native American Heritage Month: Reflect, Heal, and Build Mental Wellness Through Gratitude appeared first on SummitStone Health Partners.

]]>

November is Native American Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the rich traditions, history, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across the U.S. This month provides an opportunity to learn about Native American cultures, reflect on our shared history, and recognize the ongoing contributions of Native Americans to our nation. It’s a time for education, celebration, and fostering a deeper understanding of the diverse Native American communities and their heritage.

For many, it is also a season of reflection and gratitude, offering an opportunity to pause, take stock of our mental health, and connect with practices that promote well-being.

At SummitStone Health Partners, we recognize the significance of Native American Heritage Month in fostering not only cultural awareness but also emotional healing. This month invites us to explore the intersection of gratitude, mental health, and giving back to the community.

What Native American Heritage Month Teaches Us About Healing

Many Native American cultural traditions emphasize holistic wellness, recognizing the interconnected nature of mental, physical, and spiritual health. Indigenous practices often include mindfulness, storytelling, and community-centered approaches to well-being. Gratitude is deeply woven into these traditions, offering a way to honor life’s blessings and foster resilience. These cultural perspectives offer valuable insights into maintaining mental and emotional balance, highlighting the importance of connection, reflection, and collective support.

Gratitude and Its Mental Health Benefits

Gratitude is more than just saying “thank you”—it’s a mindset and practice that can profoundly impact mental health. Taking time to reflect on the people, moments, and opportunities you’re thankful for can:

  • Reduce Stress: Focusing on the positive aspects of life can decrease the production of stress hormones, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.
  • Enhance Relationships: Expressing gratitude strengthens social bonds and connections, fostering deeper and more meaningful relationships with others.
  • Boost Mood: Grateful individuals often report higher levels of happiness and life satisfaction, contributing to overall emotional well-being.

This November, consider starting a gratitude journal or practicing daily affirmations. You might also try reflecting on “three good things” each day or expressing appreciation to loved ones. These simple practices can support your mental wellness and cultivate a more positive outlook on life.

Giving Back: A Path to Personal Fulfillment

Native cultures often emphasize the value of community and the interconnectedness of all people. When we give back, we not only help others but also experience a sense of purpose and fulfillment ourselves.

Consider engaging in the following activities this month:

  • Support Indigenous Causes: Donate to organizations advocating for Native American communities, such as the Native American Rights Fund (NARF). NARF is a non-profit organization that uses existing laws and treaties to ensure that U.S. state and federal governments live up to their legal obligations to Native American tribes
  • Volunteer Locally: Support nonprofits that align with your values, including organizations advocating for mental health or Indigenous communities. NARF, for example, has been involved in various projects, including environmental protection, tribal governance, and the development of Indian law.
  • Donate to a Cause: Use platforms like Colorado Gives Day to support impactful charities.
  • Participate in Community Events: Connect with others through cultural events honoring Native American Heritage Month. This can help foster understanding and appreciation of Native American cultures and issues.

Mental Health Challenges in Native Communities

At SummitStone Health Partners, we are committed to providing equitable mental health care services to all individuals, including Indigenous communities in Northern Colorado. We understand that effective mental health support must incorporate Indigenous perspectives and traditional healing practices. By addressing barriers such as mistrust of government services and ensuring cultural competence among our providers, we aim to create a safe and supportive environment for our clients.

Together, we can work toward healing and empowerment for everyone, fostering a future where mental health care is accessible and responsive to all cultural backgrounds.

Understanding the Shift: Unraveling Behavioral Changes in Drug Users https://www.summitstone.org/2024/10/25/understanding-the-shift-unraveling-behavioral-changes-in-drug-users/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 13:56:49 +0000 https://www.summitstone.org/?p=13697 The post Understanding the Shift: Unraveling Behavioral Changes in Drug Users appeared first on SummitStone Health Partners.

]]>

Drug use is a complex issue that goes beyond merely consuming substances. It involves various factors, including our biology, mental health, and the environment we live in. All these elements can lead to significant behavioral changes in drug users. To effectively prevent and treat drug use, it’s essential to understand these behavioral shifts.

The landscape of drug use is always changing, with new substances emerging and usage patterns evolving over time. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) shares that trends and statistics show how drug use patterns vary across different groups and regions. Keeping up with these changes is vital for adapting our strategies to meet the unique challenges faced by various communities.

By looking closely at these issues, we can understand what causes people to use substances, create better help programs, and support those who are working toward recovery.

Exploring the Physiological and Psychological Impacts of Drug Use

Drugs can significantly affect the brain’s structure and how it functions, resulting in noticeable behavioral changes for users. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, drugs disrupt critical areas of the brain responsible for essential life functions, leading to the compulsive behaviors often seen in addiction.

On a physiological level, drugs can change how the brain communicates. They interfere with the way neurons send, receive, and process signals through neurotransmitters. This disruption can lead to difficulties in thinking, decision-making, memory, and emotional control.

On a psychological level, drug use can alter mood, behavior, and personality. Users might experience heightened anxiety, depression, or aggression, and they may become socially withdrawn or lose motivation. These psychological effects can further encourage drug-seeking behaviors and perpetuate the cycle of addiction.

The Role of Environment and Social Influences

The environment and social influences are key factors in shaping behaviors related to drug use and addiction. Research has shown that social surroundings significantly impact the likelihood of drug use and the risk of developing substance use disorders.

Interactions with peers and family can heavily influence a person’s choice to start or continue using drugs. Being around friends or family who use drugs can make substance use seem normal and increase the chances of trying drugs, leading to addiction. Environmental factors, such as living in high-stress neighborhoods or having easy access to drugs, can also contribute to risky drug use behaviors.

The Stages of Addiction and Recovery

Addiction is a complex condition that unfolds in stages, each marked by specific behavioral changes. Understanding these stages can provide insights into the recovery journey.

The Addiction Cycle illustrates how addiction progresses, starting with experimentation, moving to regular use, and ultimately leading to substance use and addiction. As individuals advance through these stages, their behaviors can change dramatically.

During the initial phases of experimentation and regular use, people may experience changes in mood, energy, and social interactions. However, as substance use intensifies, concerning behaviors may emerge, including neglecting responsibilities, engaging in risky actions, and damaging relationships.

Once addiction takes hold, individuals often become fixated on obtaining and using the substance, ignoring their health and the consequences of their choices. This stage is characterized by compulsive behavior, withdrawal symptoms, and a lack of control over their substance use.

Fortunately, recovery is possible, and it follows its own stages. The Stages of Change Model outlines the process of overcoming addiction, which includes pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.

The Stages of Change

  • Pre-contemplation: In this stage, individuals may deny or downplay their substance use problem and resist change.
  • Contemplation: As they progress, they become more aware of the consequences of their actions and may feel conflicted about changing.
  • Preparation: People in this stage begin to take small steps toward change, such as seeking information or support.
  • Action: This stage involves actively working on recovery, which may include professional treatment, attending support groups, or making lifestyle adjustments.
  • Maintenance: Finally, in this stage, individuals focus on sustaining their recovery efforts and preventing relapse, often showing improved self-care, healthier coping skills, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Embracing Change: The Path to Recovery

Seeking help for drug addiction is a courageous first step towards reclaiming one’s life. While the journey may be tough, it holds the promise of significant personal growth and transformation. By embracing change and committing to recovery, individuals can break free from the cycle of substance use and rediscover their true selves.

The path to recovery requires determination, resilience, and a willingness to confront the issues that led to addiction. Through comprehensive treatment programs, individuals gain access to a supportive network of professionals and peers who understand the complexities of addiction. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, learning effective coping strategies and developing healthier habits to replace harmful patterns of substance use.

Detoxing from Oxycodone: Why Professional Help is Crucial https://www.summitstone.org/2024/09/17/detoxing-from-oxycodone-professional-help/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 22:53:20 +0000 https://www.summitstone.org/?p=13638 The post Detoxing from Oxycodone: Why Professional Help is Crucial appeared first on SummitStone Health Partners.

]]>

Detoxing from Oxycodone (often referred to as “Oxy”) is a challenging but essential step toward regaining your health and well-being. As a powerful opioid, Oxycodone can create a strong physical and psychological dependency, making withdrawal symptoms both intense and dangerous. If you or a loved one is considering detox, it’s important to understand the risks involved and why seeking professional withdrawal management (detox) service is critical for a safe and successful recovery.

Understanding Oxycodone Addiction

Oxycodone is often prescribed for pain management, but its potent effects on the brain’s reward system can rapidly lead to addiction. When ingested or injected, opioids like Oxycodone enter the bloodstream and act on receptors in the brain that affect pain and pleasure. They block painful sensations and activate the brain’s reward center, creating feelings of bliss and reinforcing the drive to continue use. Over time, the body builds a tolerance, requiring higher doses to achieve the same relief, increasing the risk of misuse and dependency.

The most visible indicator of this public health problem has been a dramatic rise in overdose deaths. In 2015, there were over 33,000 opioid-related deaths in the United States, making it the leading cause of death among young people aged 18 to 35 years old. This stark statistic underscores the urgency of addressing opioid addiction through professional treatment.

If someone who has developed a dependency on Oxycodone stops taking the drug, they can suffer severe withdrawal symptoms such as chills, shakes, nausea, and vomiting. Even after the initial sickness subsides, the brain remains fundamentally changed. Without opioids, individuals often feel depressed and anxious, and their reward system continually craves more of the substance. Many former opioid users report experiencing daily cravings that can last for years, and potentially for the rest of their lives.

This cycle of addiction and withdrawal illustrates why detoxing without medical supervision can be both uncomfortable and life-threatening. Overcoming opioid addiction requires a comprehensive approach that includes medical and psychological support to manage withdrawal symptoms effectively and reduce the risk of relapse.

Why You Should Seek Professional Help for Detox

  1. Medical Supervision Ensures Safety Detoxing from Oxycodone is not just uncomfortable—it can be life-threatening. A professional detox program provides medical supervision, ensuring that you or your loved one are monitored around the clock. At SummitStone Health Partners’ Withdrawal Management (Detox) Services, trained professionals can manage symptoms, prevent complications, and provide medications that alleviate discomfort, making the detox process safer and more manageable.
  2. Personalized Treatment Plans Each person’s journey through detox is unique. A professional detox center tailors the treatment plan to the individual’s specific needs, considering factors such as the severity of the addiction, medical history, and personal circumstances. This personalized approach increases the likelihood of a successful detox and a smooth transition into the next phase of recovery.
  3. Access to Emotional and Psychological Support Withdrawal is not only a physical process but also an emotional one. Feelings of anxiety, depression, and cravings can be overwhelming. Professional detox centers provide access to mental health support, including counseling and therapy, which are crucial for addressing the psychological aspects of addiction.
  4. Structured Environment for Focused Recovery Detoxing in a structured environment away from everyday triggers and temptations allows you to focus solely on your recovery. Facilities like SummitStone Health Partners offer a safe, supportive setting where you can begin your journey to sobriety without the distractions or stressors of daily life.

Why Harm Reduction Strategies Are Helpful: A Compassionate Approach to Addressing Addiction https://www.summitstone.org/2024/08/30/why-harm-reduction-strategies-are-helpful/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 21:31:59 +0000 https://www.summitstone.org/?p=13610 The post Why Harm Reduction Strategies Are Helpful: A Compassionate Approach to Addressing Addiction appeared first on SummitStone Health Partners.

]]>

Addiction is a pressing issue that affects communities nationwide, and Larimer County is no exception. In fact, one in ten residents in Larimer County suffers from addiction. Yet, less than one in ten of those individuals will receive the treatment they desperately need. This leaves over 23,000 community members in need of addiction care — a number large enough to fill the Blue Arena three times over.

For individuals and families affected by substance use, finding the right support can be overwhelming. As the opioid crisis in Colorado continues to escalate, harm reduction strategies have emerged as a compassionate and effective approach to supporting those who are struggling. These strategies focus on meeting people where they are, reducing the immediate risks associated with drug use, and providing a bridge to long-term recovery.

Understanding Harm Reduction

Harm reduction is a public health strategy that seeks to minimize the negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm reduction strategies are designed to minimize the dangers of drug use while offering support and resources to those who may not be ready or able to stop using substances entirely. Instead of focusing solely on abstinence, these strategies aim to reduce harm and promote healthier behaviors in practical, non-judgmental ways.

Common harm reduction services include:

  • Syringe exchange programs: Providing clean needles to reduce the risk of infections and the spread of diseases like HIV and hepatitis.
  • Naloxone distribution: Offering life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.
  • Safe consumption sites: Providing supervised spaces where individuals can use substances in a safer environment, reducing the risk of overdose and connecting them with health services.

The goal of these programs is to keep people safe, healthy, and alive while also connecting them to the resources they need to eventually move toward recovery.

Why Harm Reduction Strategies Work

Harm reduction strategies are based on the belief that everyone deserves respect, dignity, and support, no matter where they are in their journey. These approaches recognize that recovery is not always a straightforward path and that keeping people safe in the meantime is a critical step.

Some of the key benefits of harm reduction include:

  • Reducing overdose deaths: By providing access to naloxone and safe consumption sites, harm reduction strategies save lives and give people a chance to seek help when they’re ready.
  • Building trust and connection: Many people struggling with addiction face stigma and isolation, which can make it harder to reach out for support. Harm reduction programs create safe, judgment-free environments where individuals feel accepted and are more likely to engage with services.
  • Opening doors to treatment: Harm reduction isn’t just about preventing harm; it’s about creating opportunities for people to take the next step. Many harm reduction sites offer connections to treatment programs, health services, and peer support, guiding individuals toward recovery at their own pace.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five adults in the United States live with a mental illness. However, access to quality mental and behavioral health care remains a significant challenge for many, with affordability being one of the primary barriers.

Mental and behavioral health services can be increasingly expensive, especially for those without adequate insurance coverage or those living in underserved communities. This financial strain can worsen existing mental health conditions, leading to a vicious cycle of untreated conditions and worsening symptoms.

Unaddressed mental and behavioral health issues can have far-reaching consequences, impacting not only the individual but also their families, communities, and society as a whole. What is Integrated Care?

Integrated Care refers to multi-disciplinary professionals working closely together as a treatment team to provide highly collaborative, person-centered, holistic treatment for individuals with complex health conditions and needs. An integrated team includes Medical Providers, Medical Assistants, and Behavioral Health Consultants who work alongside one another within the clinical setting. The team triages clients’ immediate needs, provides ongoing treatment, and connects with additional care and resource needs. Behavioral Health Consultants often operate in many roles, including as behavioral health clinicians, offering screening and assessment, crisis management, bite-sized clinical interventions and skills, as well as providing case management and care coordination services. Integrated Care offers lower-barrier access to comprehensive treatment services.

Principles of Team-Based Integrated Care

  • Collaborative Approach: Integrated care-based teams emphasize collaboration among various healthcare professionals, including primary care providers, specialty medical providers, behavioral health clinicians, case managers, peers, and other allied health professionals. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing support for individuals with complex healthcare needs.
  • Shared Care Planning: Integrated care teams develop shared care plans that address both physical and behavioral health concerns in a coordinated manner. These plans are developed collaboratively with input from all team members and the individual receiving care, ensuring alignment with the client’s goals and preferences.
  • Communication and Information Sharing: Effective communication and information sharing are essential for integrated care teams to function optimally. Team members regularly exchange relevant clinical information, treatment updates, and care coordination activities to ensure continuity of care and prevent gaps or duplications in services.
  • Continuous Monitoring and Follow-Up: Integrated care teams monitor the progress of individuals receiving care, regularly assessing outcomes, and adjusting treatment plans as needed. Follow-up appointments and check-ins are scheduled to ensure ongoing support and address any emerging concerns or barriers to recovery.
  • Multidisciplinary Expertise: Integrated care teams consist of professionals with diverse expertise across physical health, mental health, substance use disorders, social services, and other relevant disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach allows for comprehensive assessment and treatment of individuals with complex healthcare needs.
  • Person-Centered Care: Integrated care teams prioritize person-centered care, tailoring treatment plans to meet the unique needs, preferences, and goals of each individual. This approach emphasizes collaboration, respect for individual autonomy, and empowerment in decision-making.
  • Accessible and Coordinated Services: Integrated care teams strive to provide accessible and coordinated services, ensuring that individuals can easily access needed care and support. This may involve co-locating services, offering telehealth options, providing transportation assistance, and connecting individuals with community resources as appropriate.

The Hidden Struggle: 7 Key Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety https://www.summitstone.org/2024/07/02/7-signs-of-high-functioning-anxiety/ Tue, 02 Jul 2024 19:27:32 +0000 https://www.summitstone.org/?p=13411 The post The Hidden Struggle: 7 Key Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety appeared first on SummitStone Health Partners.

]]>

High-functioning anxiety is a form of anxiety disorder that often goes unrecognized or undiagnosed. Unlike generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), where anxiety can significantly impair daily functioning, individuals with high-functioning anxiety appear to lead relatively normal lives on the surface. However, beneath this facade lies a constant undercurrent of worry, stress, and self-doubt.

The insidious nature of high-functioning anxiety lies in its ability to masquerade as a drive for success, perfectionism, or simply being a “worrier.” These individuals may excel academically or professionally, but their achievements come at a high personal cost. They are plagued by persistent anxious thoughts, rumination, and an overwhelming sense of never being good enough, despite outward appearances of having it all together.

High-functioning anxiety is often overlooked because those who experience it can still function and meet societal expectations. Nevertheless, this ongoing feeling of unease negatively impacts their mental and physical health, resulting in burnout, fatigue, and a decreased quality of life.

The Prevalence of High-Functioning Anxiety

High-functioning anxiety is more common than many realize, affecting individuals across various backgrounds and professions. In Fort Collins and throughout Colorado, a significant portion of the population grapples with this condition, often in silence.

According to recent studies, over 40 million adults (approximately 19% of the population) experience symptoms of anxiety disorders, with Colorado falling third among the top 10 states with the highest reported instances of anxiety.

The prevalence of high-functioning anxiety can be attributed to various factors, including the fast-paced nature of modern life, societal pressures, and the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Many individuals with high-functioning anxiety may not recognize their symptoms or may perceive them as normal stress, leading to a delay in seeking professional help.

It’s important to recognize that high-functioning anxiety is not a weakness or a character flaw; it’s a legitimate mental health condition that deserves attention and support. By increasing knowledge and encouraging open discussions about the impacts of anxiety, we can establish a more empathetic and nurturing atmosphere for individuals dealing with the mental health condition in Fort Collins and other communities.

7 Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety

1. Constant Worry and Overthinking

One of the most prominent signs of high-functioning anxiety is a persistent state of worry and overthinking. Individuals with this condition often find themselves caught in a cycle of rumination, endlessly analyzing every aspect of their lives, from work and relationships to minor daily tasks. This constant mental chatter can be exhausting, leaving them feeling drained and overwhelmed.

The worries experienced by those with high-functioning anxiety are not necessarily rooted in reality but rather stem from an irrational fear of potential negative outcomes. They may obsess over worst-case scenarios, anticipating disasters that are highly unlikely to occur. This excessive worry can manifest in various forms, such as fixating on health concerns, doubting one’s abilities, or fretting over social interactions.

Overthinking is another common trait associated with high-functioning anxiety. People in this state may spend an inordinate amount of time dissecting every decision, conversation, or situation, analyzing it from every possible angle. They may find themselves caught in a loop of “what if” scenarios, constantly second-guessing themselves and struggling to make even simple choices.

This constant mental chatter can be incredibly draining, making it difficult to focus on the present moment and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Despite outward appearances of functionality, the internal experience of constant worry and overthinking can significantly impact one’s overall well-being and quality of life.

2. Perfectionism and Self-Criticism

Individuals with high-functioning anxiety often struggle with perfectionistic tendencies and harsh self-criticism. They set unrealistically high standards for themselves and are never truly satisfied with their accomplishments. This continual quest for perfection can lead to a relentless cycle of self-doubt and negative self-talk, even when others perceive their achievements as remarkable.

Perfectionism and self-criticism are closely linked to impostor syndrome, a phenomenon where individuals feel like a fraud despite their successes. They might credit their achievements to chance or outside circumstances, instead of acknowledging their own skills and dedication. This mindset can perpetuate anxiety and fear of being “exposed” or “found out,” leading to further self-doubt and self-criticism.

The pressure to excel in all areas of life can be overwhelming, and even small mistakes or perceived flaws can trigger intense feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. High-functioning individuals may spend countless hours obsessing over minute details, constantly revising and refining their work, or procrastinating due to the fear of not meeting their own exacting standards.

It’s important to recognize that perfectionism and self-criticism are often rooted in deep-seated beliefs and thought patterns that can be challenging to overcome. However, with the right support and coping strategies, it is possible to develop a healthier relationship with oneself and embrace a more balanced perspective on success and personal growth.

3. Procrastination and Avoidance

Individuals with high-functioning anxiety often struggle with procrastination and avoidance behaviors. These tendencies can stem from the overwhelming sense of worry and fear that accompanies anxiety disorders. When faced with tasks or situations that trigger anxious thoughts, people may unconsciously delay or avoid them altogether as a coping mechanism.

Procrastination can develop in various ways, such as repeatedly postponing important deadlines, leaving assignments or projects until the last minute, or engaging in time-wasting activities to avoid the source of anxiety. This behavior can lead to increased stress, decreased productivity, and a perpetual cycle of anxiety and self-criticism.

Similarly, avoidance behaviors involve actively steering clear of situations, activities, or people that provoke anxious feelings. This could include declining social invitations, missing work or school, or avoiding specific tasks or responsibilities. While avoidance may provide temporary relief, it ultimately reinforces the anxiety and prevents individuals from developing healthy coping strategies.

4. Physical Symptoms

High-functioning anxiety often manifests with physical symptoms that can significantly impact daily life. Despite appearing outwardly successful, individuals with this condition may experience persistent muscle tension, leading to frequent headaches, neck pain, or jaw clenching. Fatigue and exhaustion are also common, as the constant mental strain of anxiety can be physically draining.

Insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns are another telltale sign of high-functioning anxiety. When thoughts are racing and anxiety is present, drifting off to sleep or remaining asleep can become a challenge, ultimately causing long-term fatigue and its related health impacts.

Digestive problems like queasiness, abdominal discomfort, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can also emerge as a result of the connection between the mind and body and anxiety-related stress. Additionally, some individuals may experience dizziness, trembling, or heart palpitations, which can be unsettling and disruptive to daily activities.

5. Difficulty Relaxing

A constant battle to unwind and loosen up is one of the key indicators of having high-functioning anxiety. People with this condition often find themselves in a constant state of hyper-vigilance, their minds racing with thoughts and worries, even during activities that are meant to be enjoyable or restorative.

The inability to truly let go and be present in the moment can manifest in various ways. Some individuals may find it challenging to sit still or engage in leisure activities without feeling restless or preoccupied. Others may experience difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep due to a racing mind that won’t switch off.

This state of hyper-arousal can be both mentally and physically taxing. Individuals with high-functioning anxiety may experience muscle tension, headaches, or other physical symptoms as a result of their bodies being in a constant state of stress and vigilance.

Despite their outward appearance of having it all together, those with high-functioning anxiety may find it nearly impossible to truly relax and recharge. This perpetual state of hyper-vigilance can lead to burnout, exhaustion, and a diminished quality of life over time.

6. Social Anxiety and Withdrawal

High-functioning anxiety often manifests in social situations, leading to feelings of intense self-consciousness, fear of judgment, and a desire to avoid social interactions altogether. Individuals with this condition may experience physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, or an increased heart rate when faced with social situations, even those that may seem innocuous to others.

This social anxiety can lead to withdrawal and isolation, as those affected may avoid social gatherings, work events, or even casual interactions with friends and family. They may decline invitations, make excuses to stay home, or engage in avoidance behaviors to minimize their exposure to social situations that trigger their anxiety.

Additionally, individuals with high-functioning anxiety may struggle with small talk or engaging in conversations, fearing that they will say something embarrassing or be perceived negatively by others. This can lead to a vicious cycle of anxiety, avoidance, and loneliness, further exacerbating the condition.

It’s important to recognize that social anxiety and withdrawal are common manifestations of high-functioning anxiety and should not be dismissed or ignored. Seeking support from a mental health expert can empower individuals to cultivate coping mechanisms and skills to navigate their social anxiety effectively and deter additional isolation.

7. Substance Use or Addictive Behaviors

People experiencing high-functioning anxiety frequently resort to substances or adopt addictive behaviors as a means of dealing with their persistent concerns and intense emotions. Alcohol, drugs, or even seemingly harmless activities like excessive exercise, work, or online gaming can become unhealthy coping mechanisms.

These substances or behaviors provide temporary relief from anxiety by numbing emotions or serving as a distraction. However, they ultimately exacerbate the underlying issue and can lead to more significant problems, such as substance abuse disorders or other addictions.

It’s important to recognize these patterns and seek healthier coping strategies. Engaging in mindfulness practices, seeking professional help, or joining support groups can provide more sustainable ways to manage high-functioning anxiety without resorting to potentially harmful substances or behaviors.

Seeking Help for High-Functioning Anxiety

Recognizing the signs of high-functioning anxiety is an important first step, but it’s crucial to seek professional help to manage and overcome this condition effectively. Gender-Affirming Care and LGBTQ+ Support Groups https://www.summitstone.org/2024/05/30/lgbtq-support-groups-gender-affirming-care/ Thu, 30 May 2024 14:54:21 +0000 https://www.summitstone.org/?p=13326 The post Gender-Affirming Care and LGBTQ+ Support Groups appeared first on SummitStone Health Partners.

]]>

June marks Pride Month, a period dedicated to honoring the LGBTQ+ community and acknowledging the advancements made in the fight for equality and rights and reminding our community of LGBTQ+ support groups. One key issue is expanding access to gender-affirming care for transgender and nonbinary individuals.

Gender-affirming care allows people to outwardly match their gender identity through social, medical and/or surgical transitions. This can be a lifesaving treatment for many in the LGBTQ+ community. According to the American Psychological Association, undergoing gender transition improves the overall well-being of transgender people. Access to quality, compassionate care helps reduce discrimination and mental health issues.

This article provides an overview of gender-affirming care, why it matters for LGBTQ+ individuals, the types of care available, and LGBTQ+ support groups and resources to learn more during Pride Month and beyond. Our goal is to spread awareness so everyone can celebrate pride in their authentic gender identity.

What is Gender Affirming Care?

Gender-affirming care refers to social, medical, and psychological services and treatments that help transgender and nonbinary individuals align their appearance and characteristics with their gender identity. This type of care aims to validate a person’s gender identity by allowing them to live authentically and comfortably as who they know themselves to be.

There are several components of gender-affirming care:

Social Affirmation

This involves steps like changing one’s name, pronouns, haircut, and clothing to align with one’s gender identity. Using facilities, like restrooms and locker rooms, that match one’s gender identity is also part of social affirmation. Having supportive friends, family, coworkers, and community that recognize and affirm one’s gender identity is crucial for social transitioning.

Medical Affirmation

For those who want to medically transition, this can involve hormone therapy and various surgical procedures. Medical treatments help individuals develop physical characteristics associated with their gender identity. This may include facial or body masculinization/feminization, chest surgery, or genital reconstruction surgery. The exact treatments depend on each person’s specific goals.

Mental Health Support

Mental health services like counseling and therapy can provide guidance in one’s gender transition. Talking through feelings with a supportive professional helps many transgender and nonbinary people process emotions that may come up during their transition. Therapy offers a safe space to discuss challenges and celebrate milestones.

Importance of Gender-Affirming Care

Gender-affirming care is extremely important for the health and well-being of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Access to gender-affirming medical treatments and social support has been shown to greatly improve mental health outcomes and quality of life.

Some of the key benefits of gender-affirming care include:

  • Improved mental health and reduced depression/anxiety. Being able to live as one’s true gender identity and having gender affirmation from others has a hugely positive impact on mental health. Individuals report lower stress levels, greater life satisfaction, and an overall improved sense of well-being.
  • Reduced suicide risk. Studies show that gender-affirming care significantly reduces suicidal ideation and attempts among transgender individuals. Affirming medical care and social acceptance act as protective factors against the alarmingly high rates of suicide within the transgender community.
  • Ability to live authentically as true gender. Access to treatments like hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries allows transgender individuals to align their physical appearance and characteristics with their gender identity. This alleviates distressing gender dysphoria and enables individuals to live fully and confidently as their true gender.

Providing compassionate and comprehensive gender-affirming care is absolutely vital for supporting transgender people, validating their identity, and promoting their health, safety and happiness. It’s an essential human right that can transform and save lives.

Finding a Provider

When looking for a provider for gender-affirming care, it’s important to find someone you feel comfortable with and who has experience treating transgender patients. Here are some tips for finding a good provider:

  • Look for providers who list experience with transgender healthcare or LGBTQ+ patients on their website or in their practice description. You can search online directories like GLMA or Psychology Today.
  • Ask your doctor or current therapist for a referral to a transgender-friendly provider. Local LGBTQ+ centers may also have recommendations.
  • Schedule a consultation to interview potential providers before committing to treatment. Come prepared with questions like:
    • How much experience do you have treating transgender patients?
    • Are you knowledgeable about the WPATH standards of care?
    • Do you provide hormone therapy, surgeries, or other transition-related care?
    • Do you accept my insurance? If not, what are the costs?
  • Check that the provider you choose is in-network with your health insurance. Call your insurance company to ask which transition-related treatments are covered. This is important, as some treatments can be very expensive without insurance.
  • Look for providers with expertise in transgender mental healthcare. Counseling can be an important part of transitioning comfortably. Seeking out therapists experienced in gender identity issues is ideal.

Finding a compassionate, knowledgeable provider you trust is key for receiving quality gender-affirming treatment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and do your research to ensure you find the right fit.

Mental Health Considerations

The LGBTQ+ community faces disproportionately high rates of mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. Studies show that LGBTQ+ youth are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers. Discrimination, bullying, and lack of acceptance from family or community can contribute to poor mental health outcomes

Finding an LGBTQ+-affirming therapist and/or an LGBTQ+ support group is crucial for getting appropriate support. Look for therapists who display LGBTQ+-positive signs or mention LGBTQ+ issues in their profiles. If possible, get referrals from other LGBTQ+ people. It’s reasonable to ask potential therapists about their experience with and approach to LGBTQ+ clients. You deserve a space to discuss your identity and related struggles without judgment.

A supportive therapist can help you process traumatic experiences like bullying, navigate coming out, and build self-esteem or resilience against discrimination. They may also assess you for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and help you manage symptoms. Group therapy with other LGBTQ+ people can provide community and show you’re not alone in your experiences.

Don’t be afraid to “therapist shop” until you find the right fit. Having an LGBTQ+-affirming mental health professional on your side can make a huge difference. Prioritize your mental well-being and get help now if you’re struggling.
